Visian ICL
Implantable contact lenses (ICL), also called phakic intraocular lenses (IOL) or implantable collamer lenses, are a kind of internal corrective lens for the eye. ICLs operate according to a similar principle as external contact lenses. The difference is that ICLs are surgically inserted into the eye, where they remain permanently. The ICL procedure itself resembles cataract surgery, which involves the replacement of the eye's natural crystalline lens with an artificial intraocular lens. The crystalline lens remains in place during the ICL procedure, and a corrective lens is inserted in front of it. The ICL procedure is a relatively new option in vision correction -- the Fifth Avenue Eye Center's Dr. Ilan Cohen was the first ophthalmologist in the New York Tri-State region to perform this surgery.
Phakic IOLs are used primarily to treat moderate to severe myopia (nearsightedness), since this condition is not conveniently corrected with eyeglasses or external contact lenses. Of course, for qualified patients, myopia can be corrected through LASIK surgery or PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) surgery. These procedures involve a laser that reshapes the cornea and corrects any refractive errors. However, phakic IOLs are often used to correct higher refractive errors than LASIK or PRK. Phakic IOLs have the additional benefit of not altering the tissue of the eye, as is the case with laser surgery. As a result, ICLs are safer and can be easily reversed if necessary. This reversal simply requires the removal of implanted in a minor outpatient procedure.
STAAR Surgical's Visian ICLs are made from a unique collamer material that is completely biocompatible, meaning the ICLs pose no risk of rejection by the body's immune system and thus can stay in place indefinitely. Visian ICL offers patients the amazing possibility of a lifetime of clear vision with no required maintenance. The ICLs are invisible to the eye and reduce reflections that can be disruptive to vision. Since the Visian ICL is designed to be implanted behind rather than in front of the iris, rhe lens implant is less likely to cause damage to the cornea. STAAR Surgical's Visian ICL was the first phakic IOL approved by the FDA, and it remains the choice of Dr. Cohen and the Fifth Avenue Eye Center.
